Performer: Oscar Peterson
Artist: Ray Brown; Ed Thigpen Distributor: Universal Distribution Notes: THE TRIO LIVE IN CHICAGO contains 5 bonus tracks. Personnel: Oscar Peterson (piano); Ray Brown (bass); Ed Thigpen (drums). Recorded live at the London House, Chicago, Illinois, July 1961. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of the Verve Master Edition series. The Oscar Peterson Trio with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen lacked the competitiveness of his earlier group with Brown and guitarist Herb Ellis, and the later daring of his solo performances, but the pianist was generally in peak form during this era. He sticks to standards on this live CD (a good example of the Trio's playing), stretching out "Sometimes I'm Happy" creatively for over 11 minutes and uplifting such songs as "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning," "Chicago" and "The Night We Called It a Day." Few surprises occur, but Peterson plays at such a consistently high level that one doesn't mind. ~ Scott Yanow
Down Beat (3/98, pp.47-48) - 4 1/2 stars (out of 5) - "...one of the great on-site recording dates....exquisite..."
Among the most prodigiously recorded artists in all of jazz, pianist Oscar Peterson early on forged a strong relationship with producer Norman Granz, and since the 1950s he has been one of the cornerstones of Granz's labels (Verve, Pablo). Peterson has primarily worked in a trio setting, alternately with guitar & bass or bass & drums, though he has also performed solo, with larger groups, and with a full orchestra. Possessing dazzling technique, Peterson always delivers the musical goods in a powerfully swinging style. Peterson passed away December 23, 2007 at the age of 82.
