Notes: A nice combination of well-known and lesser-known songs from some of the most famous salseros, Las No. 1 de la Salsa features tracks from Ray Barretto ("Indestructible"), Ismael Rivera ("Dime por Qu"), Willie Coln ("Idilio"), and Rubn Blades ("Camalen"). And while Celia Cruz's "La Negra Tiene Tumbao" may not be the best representation of the singer's body of work, it's still pretty fun (although it certainly has a darker undertone than what's found in most salsa), and complements the rest of the record nicely. The music on Las No. 1 de la Salsa spans from the late '70s to the early part of the new millennium, showcasing a nice slice of the genre's history, and making -- in terms of good salsa compilations -- the album one of the better overviews out there. ~ Marisa Brown
