Distributor: Fontana Distribution Notes: In the 1960s, Serge Gainsbourg created a sensation in Europe with his cunningly provocative lyrics, suave musicality, and image as a lovable cad. His influence lived on after his 1991 passing, unmistakable in the breathy, lounging sensuality of Tricky and Portishead and the detached lechery of Pulp's Jarvis Cocker and Placebo's Brian Molko. All of these acts pay tribute to the French singer-songwriter on MONSIEUR GAINSBOURG REVISITED, a diverse record which captures the remarkable range of the artist's sway. The compilation opens with the ingenious pairing of arthouse rockers Franz Ferdinand with Jane Birkin, long-time Gainsbourg lover, muse, and musical partner, on "Sorry Angel," and takes a serpentine path through the lo-fi stylings of Cat Power, the laid-back reggae of Sly & Robbie, and the indie-rock of the Rakes. All in all, it's a remarkable array of talent which ably reflects the spirit of the prismatic Gainsbourg.
