Notes: Personnel: Memphis Slim (vocals, piano, clavichord); Chris Spedding, Peter Green (guitar); John Paul Jones (Hammond b-3 organ); Larry Steele (bass guitar); Conrad Isidore (drums). Recorded in 1970 with a host of young blues and rock musicians, Blue Memphis isn't in the same league as Memphis Slim's early recordings for Chess or United, but it does hold up better than similar dates released by fellow blues artists in that era (e.g., Muddy Waters' Fathers and Sons or Howlin' Wolf's London Sessions). On these 13 tracks, Slim is backed by several British musicians, including Chris Spedding, John Paul Jones, Duster Bennett, and Peter Green, who had just split from Fleetwood Mac and would shortly disappear from the music business. Thanks to the folks at Wounded Bird, Blue Memphis has been made available on CD for the first time, allowing fans another opportunity to investigate this period of Memphis Slim's output. ~ Al Campbell
Living Blues (p.59) - "[T]he most ambitious recording of Memphis Slim's prolific career."
