Toronto's indie "big band" Broken Social Scene provided much of the music and emotional cues for Ryan Fleck's film HALF NELSON. Their sprawling, post-rock arrangements and understated emotionality go well with the restrained but powerful performances in the movie. But the soundtrack album is a true mixed bag, with delightful surprises like "It's All right to Cry" from FREE TO BE YOU AND ME and Billy Bragg's goofy-sweet "New England."
