Audio Remasterers: Dave Schultz; Dan Hersch; Bill Inglot. Liner Note Author: Hua Hsu. Arrangers: Nile Rodgers; Bernard Edwards. DEFINITIVE GROOVE is a strong statement to make in an album title, but in the case of Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards's Chic, it's all too fitting: after all, their epoch-defining hit, "Good Times," was not only a smash on its own, but Edwards's bassline was immediately swiped by the likes of the Sugarhill Gang (on "Rapper's Delight") and Queen (on "Another One Bites The Dust") before becoming second only to James Brown's "Funky Drummer" as the most recognizable hip-hop sample ever. This two-disc, 30-track set contains all the band's hit singles in their original full-length versions, from the sardonic "Dance Dance Dance (Yowsah Yowsah Yowsah)," a thinly veiled attack on anti-disco racism, to the indelible smash "Le Freak" and beyond. Key album tracks and rarities are also included, making DEFINITIVE GROOVE a superlative anthology.
Brainchild of guitarist Nile Rodgers and bassist Bernard Edwards, Chic was one of the most successful groups of the disco era, both financially and creatively. Employing sparse, syncopated rhythm tracks as the basis for a slickly produced, yet highly recognizable sound, Chic avoided typical disco blandness, appealing to a wide variety of listeners. After Chic's demise, Edwards and Rodgers became successful producers and Chic's influence continued to be heard in the music of everyone from David Bowie to Duran Duran.
