Photographer: Steve Schapiro. Arranger: Ernie Wilkins. There are few more readily recognizable alto saxophone sounds in jazz than that of Julian "Cannonball" Adderley. A disciple of Charlie Parker, Adderley invested his bebop vocabulary with a passionate, blues-rich tone. At a time when jazz was becoming more cerebral (late 1950s/early '60s), Cannonball opted for a hard-swinging, immediately engaging group style that made him internationally popular. The RIVERSIDE PROFILES series presents highlights from his tenure with the Riverside label--most selections feature his classic Quintet (with cornetist/brother Nat and future Weather Report pianist Joe Zawinul), but there's a unique big-band selection and fine one-off sessions with Milt Jackson and Bill Evans as well. Riverside Profiles contains previously released tracks taken from the alto saxophonist and bandleader's stint with the label from 1959 to 1963. The nine tracks, aimed at the casual listener, include the classics "This Here," "Dizzy's Business," "Jive Samba," "Work Song," and "African Waltz." Cannonball Adderley is backed by an extraordinary roster of jazz musicians, including cornetist brother Nat Adderley; saxophonists Yusef Lateef and Oliver Nelson; trumpeter Blue Mitchell; pianists Bobby Timmons, Bill Evans, and Barry Harris; bassist Sam Jones; and drummers Art Blakey, Philly Joe Jones, and Louis Hayes. The stellar band lineups and musicianship make this an excellent sampler for the novice. For a limited time, the first pressings in this series include a free bonus compilation CD of Riverside artists. ~ Al Campbell
Cannonball Adderley's blues-soaked tone and swinging delivery on alto sax stood out immediately when he arrived in New York in 1955. He joined the Miles Davis Quintet a few years later and appeared on the seminal KIND OF BLUE album. While many were searching for new forms during the '60s, Adderley, in a quintet with his brother Nat, stuck wholeheartedly to a gospel-tinged soul-blues style. The group's hits, such as 1967's "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy," pushed jazz closer to rock without compromising the music's spirit, a trend Adderley would carry on through the fusion-drenched '70s.
