This time he focuses on jazz released on Impulse during that label's golden years in the 1960s. While this may not seem like a revelatory achievement on Peterson's part, the compilation does, in fact, live up to the title PURE FIRE. Archie Shepp, John Coltrane, Art Blakey, and Yusef Lateef are only a few of the artists featured, and the music represents a dynamic cross-section of post-bop, modal, and free jazz influence. As a result, PURE FIRE plays like a time capsule of Impulse's best period, but it also offers a timeless set of superior music and musicianship.
