The second studio album to feature the revamped Gov't Mule lineup, 2006's HIGH & MIGHTY finds the adventurous Southern rock quartet breaking into a confident new stride. As always, vocalist/guitarist Warren Haynes's soulful singing and blistering slide work lead the way, as the rest of the band intuitively fill out his compositions with impressive rhythmic and melodic flourishes. Although the fierce opening track, "Mr. High & Mighty," may have listeners thinking Gov't Mule has morphed into a straight-up hard-rock act, other songs delve into reggae ("Unring the Bell") and gospel-tinged blues ("Million Miles from Yesterday"), revealing that the ensemble remains as eclectic as ever.
Rolling Stone (p.196) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he closing remix of 'I'm a Ram,' titled 'Plasticine Era,' is a hip minefield of wah-wah-guitar bark..."
Entertainment Weekly (p.86) - "[T]he sledge-hammer sound remains as punishing as ever....Their dedication to craft is edifying, life-affirming, and deeply satisfying." -- Grade: A-
The Allman Brothers Band offshoot Gov't Mule combines the improvisatory aesthetic of jam bands with the heavy-duty blues-rock sensibility of classic power trios like Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Guitarist Warren Haynes and bassist Allen Woody, the band's founders, were both virtuosic musicians, and when drummer Matt Abts joined in, the circle was complete. Woody died in 2000, and rather than replace him, the band recorded two consecutive albums accompanied by a host of famous guest bassists from every conceivable walk of the musical world.
