Always overshadowed commercially by the Eagles and critically by Gram Parsons, Poco occupies a tertiary place in the annals of country rock. While much of the recipe was similar, the band did not have the pop sensibility of the former or the emotional intensity of the latter. Their sunny take on the genre and their impeccable picking chops, however, made them in some ways the most "country" of the three. This two-CD set collects the essential cuts from all eras in one place, and represents all the Poco the casual fan will ever need.
Poco was part of the first wave of West Coast country-rock bands, emerging from the ashes of the seminal Buffalo Springfield and initially built around Springfield's singer/guitarist Richie Furay and producer/sessionman Randy Meisner. They combined the harmony-laden folk-rock sound of the '60s with a country twang (mostly courtesy of pedal steel guitarist Rusty Young) and made a few noted country-rock albums in the early '70s before their sound turned slicker and poppier later in the decade.
