Distributor: RED Distribution Notes: The second installment of songs from and inspired by the hit Showtime series Weeds transcends the usual stitched-together assortment of big label wannabes. Sure, there are the requisite, overly self-conscious singer/songwriters, Jenny Owen Youngs ("F***, Was I") and Sufjan Stevens ("Holland"), but there are also some real left-field treats. Cambodian garage rock revivalists Dengue Fever's "One Thousand Tears of a Tarantula" dutifully supports the show's herb-infused psychedelia, the bluesy country gospel of Fern Jones' "Strange Things Happening" makes midnight sound like the brightest of mornings, and Aidan Hawken's dreamy "Neighborhood," which sounds suspiciously like a sped-up version of "Time" by the Alan Parsons Project, hints at the program's occasional barbs of poignancy. Add in quality tracks from Regina Spektor, Rogue Wave, and the Real Tuesday Weld (the latter's infectious "Bathtime in Clerkenwell" will stick to your brain like rubber cement), and you've got one of the year's most creative and rewarding soundtracks. ~ James Christopher Monger
