Arranger: Chuck Wayne. Tony Bennett, the awardee (or sometimes victim) of countless repackaging plans by Columbia executives throughout the ages, gets treated (or victimized) yet again with a massive box set, Classic Collection. This isn't a compilation of Bennett's career like previous ones, but a collection within a box set that includes a full dozen of Bennett's original studio albums from the '50s to the '90s, all of them remastered (several for the first time) and most of them featuring previously unreleased bonus tracks. The full list includes: Cloud 7 (1955), The Beat of My Heart (1957), Tony Sings for Two (1960), I Left My Heart in San Francisco (1962), I Wanna Be Around (1963), When Lights Are Low (1964), If I Ruled the World: Songs for the Jet Set (1965), The Movie Song Album (1966), The Tony Bennett Bill Evans Album (1975), The Art of Excellence (1986), Perfectly Frank (1992), and MTV Unplugged (1994). Also included is The Singles Collection, a new compilation with 26 tracks extending from "The Boulevard of Broken Dreams" to "Something." ~ John Bush
One of the finest voices of 20th century American pop, Tony Bennett began his career in the '50s, under the watchful eye of producer Mitch Miller, recording huge hits such as "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," and "Because of You." In 1958, his album BASIE SWINGS-BENNETT SINGS was a precursor to later jazz-based work. That same year, "Firefly" was Bennett's last US Top 40 entry until 1962, when he made a major comeback with the Grammy-winning "I Left My Heart In San Francisco." In '93 and '94 he was awarded Grammys for his albums PERFECTLY FRANK and STEPPIN' OUT.
