Notes: Personnel: Martin Carthy (guitar); Dave Swarbrick (fiddle); Kevin Dempsey (guitar). Liner Note Author: Martin Carthy. Fans of British folk rejoiced at the reunion of two stalwarts on this 2006 release. Violinist (and former Fairport Conventioneer) Dave Swarbrick and singer/guitarist Martin Carthy (Waterson:Carthy, Steeleye Span) were one of the folk world's favorite duos in the mid 1960s, and their brief resurgence in the '90s was cut short by illnesses and intervening side projects. Here they resume their recording career as if nothing happened, doling out reels, jigs, and ballads that pierce the heart. Although the album is heavy on traditional numbers, the originals blend in seamlessly.
Dirty Linen (p.50) - "Swarbrick's playing is superb throughout, whether he's driving the rhythm or providing a bedrock of melody..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.106) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Swarbrick puts in a revelatory performance, his bow dancing with characteristic verve and grace..."
One of the most influential figures of the '60s folk revival, Carthy was recognized as a virtuoso folk guitarist and was resident at London's top folk club the Troubadour. There, he taught songs to visiting Americans including Bob Dylan and Paul Simon, who adapted them for their own records. From 1969-72, he was a member of folk-rock band Steeleye Span. In 1998, national treasure Carthy was awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours.
