Notes: This 2006 Aventura outing finds "los reyes de la bachata moderna" ("the kings of modern bachata") living up to their esteemed reputation. Throughout the highly percussive set, the Bronx, New York-based group presents lovelorn Dominican roots tunes such as "Los Infieles" and "Llorar," mixing up the proceedings with occasional skits in both English and Spanish. Formed in 1994 in the Bronx, Aventura began as the dream of four young Dominicans (from the same family) who aspired to fuse bachata music with urban R&B and hip-hop. Although ostensibly a "boy band," Aventura set themselves apart from typical pre-fab outfits by writing their own material and playing their own instruments. Their debut arrived in 1999, and its follow-up, 2002's WE BROKE THE RULES, found a following with the help of its hit single "Obsession." Subsequent releases, such as LOVE & HATE and GOD'S PROJECT, found Aventura continuing to gain an audience in the hip-hop and R&B markets, without sacrificing the rootsy, Latin-influenced side of their sound.
