Notes: Updating the early 1990s set GOLD, which helped spark a renewal of interest in what is perhaps the greatest pure pop band of the 1970s, the 18-track NUMBER ONES is ABBA at its very best. The Swedish foursome's finest are all present here, from early bubblegum confections (the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest winner "Waterloo") through their numerous career high points (the gloriously infectious "Dancing Queen" and "SOS") to reflective later hits ("The Winner Takes It All"). NUMBER ONES is the best single-disc ABBA retrospective available.

Not many pop groups end up on postage stamps, as Abba has in its native Sweden; but then again, few groups become their homeland's most identifiable export. The group's stratospheric success was built on a foundation of buoyant, exquisitely arranged and produced pop music. Although they called it a day in the early 1980s, Abba lives on in the form of popular tribute bands and albums, a Broadway musical, and consistent record sales of their voluminous catalog.
