Performer: Marvin Gaye
Artist: Diana Ross
Distributor: Universal Distribution

Notes: Producers include: Marvin Gaye, Ed Townsend, Leon Ware, T-Boy Ross, Brian Holland. Compilation producer: Harry Weinger. Digitally remastered by Suha Gur (Universal Music Studios East). The second volume of Universal's 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection compilation of Marvin Gaye's work focuses on his '70s hits, including classic tracks like "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)," "What's Going On," "Let's Get It On," "Trouble Man," and "You're a Special Part of Me." Though it isn't a complete portrait of his artistry, this collection is an affordable introduction to some of Gaye's most personal and political singing and songwriting. ~ Heather Phares
Marvin Gaye began his career in the late 1950s, singing with various R&B vocal groups. Soon he moved on to work as a session drummer and vocalist at Motown. Gaye's own '60s albums are marked by propulsive, high-energy R&B, and duets with Mary Wells and Tammi Terrell. In the '70s, he crafted a unique, highly personal vision of R&B, incorporating socio-political issues, atmospheric arrangements, and unified album themes. His early, violent death robbed the world of a true genius.
