Performer: The dB's
Distributor: E1 Distribution (USA) Notes: The dB's, Southern-via-New York City jangle-poppers, released the kernel of this collection in the mid-1980s as an EP of holiday covers done up indie-rock style. It has since evolved into a generous various-artists compilation of chestnuts and originals by the band's famous friends, including Marshall Crenshaw, Don Dixon, Big Star, and Whiskeytown, among others. In the crowded field of holiday music, this one stands out as a genuine classic.
Uncut (p.97) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "CHRISTMAS TIME AGAIN captures the exhilaration and melancholy beneath the season's glitzy veneer."
Though the dB's were technically part of the second (post-Big Star) wave of power pop, they were the closest among their peers to the source, having actually backed up Big Star frontman Alex Chilton in the '70s before staking their own claim in the early '80s. Led by two equally strong singer/songwriters, Chris Stamey and Peter Holsapple, they brought a quirky, new wave sensibility to their carefully crafted, Beatles-inspired popcraft, tailoring the British sound of the '60s for the skinny-tie crowd in the US. After Stamey left, the band soldiered on for a couple of great albums, but Holsapple eventually became a sessionman (R.E.M., Hootie & the Blowfish) before founding the Continental Drifters with wife Susan Cowsill.
