Performer: Ultramagnetic MC's
Engineer: Kurt Lindsay Producer: Ariel Caban; Underwear Pissy; Moe "Love" Smith; Ced-Gee Distributor: Fontana Distribution Notes: Additional personnel: Goody-2, Gee-Banga. In the 13 years since the last official studio release from the Ultramagnetic MCs, frontman Kool Keith went through countless aliases, side projects, and tenuous industry alliances, while his former partners, Ced Gee, TR, and Moe Luv largely played the low. With the release of 2007's THE BEST KEPT SECRET, the man once primarily known as Rhythm X is back with his original crew. From track one on it's clear that former mental patient Keith is still as strong as ever, coming with that same grandiose Ego Trippin' imagery that made him infamous, while Ced Gee balances with equally forceful hustler/porn star posturing. With 14 tracks produced by the group, THE BEST KEPT SECRET is the welcome return of the Ultramag's classic space cadet sound.
The Bronx-based Ultramagnetic MC's were hip-hop's original weirdos. Formed in the mid 1980s, the UMC's best-known member remains to this day the infamous MC Kool Keith. The group's 1988 full-length debut, CRITICAL BEATDOWN, is a hip-hop classic, and while it wasn't a commercial success, the album's frenetic, heavily layered, sample-heavy production style and off-beat lyrical sensibilities have been lauded as key influences by the likes of MF Doom, Public Enemy, De La Soul, and British techno act Prodigy. Kool Keith has also had a remarkable run as a solo artist, using various aliases to create music that ranges from utterly brilliant to flat-out deranged.
