Recording information: 1963 - 1981. In his native Brazil, Antonio Carlos Jobim (1927-1994) is virtually Bob Dylan and George Gershwin combined. Jobim was a singer, songwriter, pianist, and guitarist who practically invented bossa nova by blending Brazilian folk and pop, jazz, and the Impressionism of classical composer Claude Debussy. He's so renowned as a songwriter--Frank Sinatra, Sergio Mendes, and Stan Getz, among others, performed his creations--many don't know him as a singer. His soothingly romantic delivery in FOR LOVERS makes for elegant, near-perfect late-evening listening.
Antonio Carlos Jobim is one of the founding figures of bossa nova. Starting with his work with guitarist Joao Gilberto in the late 1950s ("Chega de Saudade," "Desafinado"), Jobim composed a string of unforgettable songs that combined subtle rhythms, modern harmony, and poetic lyrics, and which quickly found their way from Brazil to the rest of the world. His music has been performed and recorded by countless musicians, and by the time of his death in 1994, Jobim was widely regarded as one of the great composers of popular song.
