This musical appreciation of the works of the legendary film score composer Ennio Morricone features contributions from artists as diverse as Bruce Springsteen and Celine Dion. Highlights include Pink Floyd member Roger Waters' special composition, "Lost Boys Calling," opera singer Andrea Boccelli's "Conradiana," and Metallica's version of "Ecstasy of Gold," a cut that anyone who's seen them live will recognize as their concert fanfare. Morricone himself composed several pieces of incidental instrumental music for this collection, which was released to coincide with his Honorary Oscar, given at the 79th Academy Awards in 2007. We All Love Ennio Morricone sounds like a great idea (contemporary performers putting their own spin on the maestro's long, storied and incredibly diverse repertoire) but despite a few noteworthy displays of creativity (Yo-Yo Ma's mournful "Malena" and Roger Waters' stirring "Lost Boys Calling"), the whole affair feels a little too unfocused. Even Morricone's newly recorded bits in-between each track feel forced and out of place, resulting in a fascinating failure, but a failure nonetheless. ~ James Christopher Monger
