Performer: Three Dog Night
Distributor: Universal Distribution Notes: Compilation producers: Andy McKaie, Mike Ragogna. Includes liner notes by Mike Ragogna. Digitally remastered by Elliot Federman (SAJE Sound, New York, New York). This is part of MCA's 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection series. Yet another entry in Universal's wide ranging 20TH CENTURY MASTERS reissue series, this budget-priced 12-track compilation is a brief but thorough look at this early-'70s pop-rock supergroup. Led by ex-Brian Wilson protege Danny Hutton, Three Dog Night had a knack for hit singles which were exceedingly catchy without being gimmicky. With their solid taste in contemporary songwriters--Hoyt Axton (with two songs, "Joy to the World" and "Never Been to Spain"), Randy Newman, Laura Nyro, Harry Nilsson and Russ Ballard wrote the group's biggest hits--and the strong harmonies of Hutton and lead singer Chuck Negron, Three Dog Night were one of the most distinctive-sounding and musically satisfying groups of the era. Collecting all their major hits, 20TH CENTURY MASTERS wisely includes the superior mono mixes whenever possible. This is a fine, inexpensive introduction to an under-appreciated band.
Though they were disdained by hipsters for being "too commercial," Three Dog Night were massively successful. Between 1969 and '75, they had 21 Top 40 singles and 10 platinum albums. The format of the group was unusual for a rock band, as it featured three lead singers (Chuck Negron, Danny Hutton, Cory Wells) mostly interpreting material by other writers. The band had hits with tunes by Randy Newman, Laura Nyro, and Hoyt Axton, among others.
