Distributor: E1 Distribution (USA) Notes: This best-of highlights the early career of the long-running funk outfit, well before they hit their mid-1970s stride with hits such as "Love Rollercoaster," "Fire," and "Who'd She Coo?" The Motown-influenced set includes a bluesy version of Judy Garland's "Over the Rainbow," R&B rave-ups such as "Soul Party" and "Lonely Streets At Midnight," and '60s funk workouts such as "Mother-in-Law."
One of the most important and successful funk bands of the '70s, the Ohio Players made effective use of aggressive horns and big, butt-shakin' bass lines. The group produced a wide variety of great, sex-savvy soul music, many of their biggest hits were sex-related novelties. Unfortunately, the Ohio Players are now remembered almost as much for their erotic cover art as for their music.
