Performer: Various Artists
Producer: James Anthony Carmichael; Daryl Dragon; David Thoener; Dennis Lambert; Ed Townsend; Freddie Perren; Keith Thomas; Lionel Richie; Marc Tanner; Marvin Gaye; Michael Wagener; Rick Nowels; The Commodores; Babyface; UB40; Bill Medley; Brian Potter; Bill Levenson (Compilation) Distributor: Universal Distribution Notes: Audio Mixer: Michael Wagener. Arrangers: James Anthony Carmichael; Keith Thomas ; The Commodores. Each of the singles compiled on Number 1's: Love Songs topped the Billboard pop chart at some point from 1965 through 1994. That's a broad range of years for any compilation, so there should be some era-to-era speed bumps if you attempt to listen to the disc all the way through. To Universal's credit, there are no such bumps, thanks to a well though-out sequencing job: Peaches & Herb reach Nelson through Lionel Richie, Captain & Tennille, Player, and Extreme. There's a pronounced adult contemporary bent to the selections, but we're dealing with love songs, after all, so it shouldn't be terribly surprising. The few upbeat songs among all the ballads include Belinda Carlisle's "Heaven Is a Place on Earth" and Yvonne Elliman's "If I Can't Have You." ~ Andy Kellman
