Ten years after Arista's double-disc set The Definitive Collection, Arista/Legacy's double-disc compilation The Essential Alan Parsons Project arrived in 2007. Similar length, similar titles, and, if you already have the first one, there's not much reason to replace it. But if you're in the market for a Parsons comp that goes beyond the hits, this is the set to get: it has all those hits plus the radio staples and a good selection of album tracks, and it's sharply sequenced. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Alan Parsons began as a high-profile recording engineer, working with the likes of the Beatles and Pink Floyd, but he soon made an artistic name of his own with the Alan Parsons Project, a free-floating collective that revolved around Parsons and his partner Eric Woolfson. APP turned out (unsurprisingly) immaculate productions that blended '70s progressive rock with accessible AM pop and enjoyed a number of hit singles in the '80s.
