Distributor: Caroline Distribution Notes: For the soundtrack to the 2007 romantic comedy BECAUSE I SAID SO, starring Diane Keaton and Mandy Moore, the filmmakers compiled a top-notch set of decades-spanning pop. Highlights of the collection include KT Tunstall's energetic "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" and the Shirelles' "Mama Said," a vintage R&B number that perfectly reflects the mother/daughter relationship between Keaton and Moore's characters. One does have to wonder where soundtrack compilers get the "Music From and Inspired by the Motion Picture." This may have happened once or twice in the '90s, but since that time it's simply a biz gag to place product on a soundtrack recording. In other words, the titles should read "Music From and That Schematically Makes Sense on This Soundtrack Because We Didn't Have Enough Room to Fill a CD Since the Score Was Too Long and Needed Its Own Disc." Ad reps could make this catchy, of course. What is here are newish tracks by KT Tunstall, Terra Naomi, All Too Much, and the Weepies, alternating between soul, pop, funk and rockabilly tunes by classic artists like Ricky Nelson doing "That's All Right Mama" from his great early period with James Burton. There are cuts by the Impressions, Crystal Waters, Sandie Shaw and Marlena Shaw (no relation), the Shirelles and Honey Cone. It's more like the label wanted to showcase their new artists and this was the best way to get them across: on a soundtrack. It's a cynical marketing angle and doesn't always make for pleasant listening. But Tunstall would be great next to Ricky Nelson, and the soul tracks all stack up. The Weepies? C'mon. ~ Thom Jurek
