To listen to sound clips, you'll need the most current version of the
Performer: Various Artists
Distributor: City Hall Notes: This double CD set provides an introductory overview to some of the pioneers of the 1960s and '70s British folk-rock boom, including the legendary Fairport Convention, whose "Meet on the Ledge" is a genre classic; the Strawbs, who made a similar leap from acoustic to electric folk around the same time; and the 1970s Newcastle band Lindisfarne, whose charming "Meet Me on the Corner" is one of this collection's highlights. This Czech import on the Primo label is one of the strangest compilations on the market when it comes to folk music, and primarily the prog folk music of the British scene in the late '60s and early '70s. Included here are two discs filled with 24 cuts. The artists range from Fairport Convention and the Strawbs to Medicine Head, Stackridge, and Lindisfarne. No Pentangle, no Steeleye Span, but dig this: they managed to include tracks by Melanie(!!!) Rick Wakeman (!!!!!) and Shane MacGowan (!!!!!!) Who knows what's up there. That all said, this is a pleasant listen through if one excludes Melanie and Wakeman. Both are acquired tastes and don't exactly fit in with the rest of what's here. There are no liner notes to speak of, but the collection sounds good and the price is definitely right. If you can find this thing, it's well worth the small investment. ~ Thom Jurek
