Notes: It's virtually impossible to imagine modern music without the contributions of Les Paul. Not only was he a brilliant jazz guitarist with no fear of going pop or country, he literally made the template for how a good electric guitar should be made when he designed his famous Les Paul model for Gibson Guitars. Add in the fact that he single-handedly invented multi-track recording with the release of "Lover" (included here) in 1948, and his influence is pervasive, if not always acknowledged, even in today's 21st century hip-hop world. This budget two-disc, 40-track collection brings together some of Paul's solo sides as well as sides he did with his wife and singing partner, Mary Ford, and while this set is pretty bare-bones as far as annotation, it demonstrates Paul's (and Ford's) unique contribution to pop music at an affordable price. ~ Steve Leggett This 20-track budget compilation includes ten of Les Paul & Mary Ford's Top Ten Capitol Records hits from 1950-1954, among them the gold records "How High the Moon," "Vaya con Dios," "The World Is Waiting for the Sunrise," and "Mockin' Bird Hill," But it excludes a handful of the duo's other Top Ten singles and replaces them with songs that were not hits at all. For casual fans looking for their biggest records at a low price, it's a good buy, but it is not a comprehensive survey of Les Paul & Mary Ford's most popular material. ~ William Ruhlmann
