Performer: Marc Broussard
Producer: Justin Tocket; Calvin Turner Distributor: Welk Notes: The son of the Boogie Kings' Ted Broussard, Marc Broussard has Louisiana music history coursing through his veins. A charmingly gruff soul singer in the vein of Otis Redding (along with some of the rasp of John Hiatt), Broussard was born to do this album. S.O.S. is something of a concept album, a survey of 1960s and '70s pop-soul, Motown, and gospel-charged R&B. Broussard tips his hat to St. Marvin (Gaye), covering "Inner City Blues" and "If I Could Build My Whole Word Around You," as well as hot New Orleans sounds (local legend Allan Toussaint's "Yes We Can, Can," a hit for the Pointer Sisters). While it won't win awards for originality, S.O.S. lives up to its title, a heartfelt revival and celebration of American music.
No Depression (p.95) - "S.O.S. certainly works as a tribute to soul, marking Broussard as a young classicist. It's also a good sign that his 'Come In From The Cold' is the most compelling moment on the album."
