Assembling tracks from a variety of the slain rapper Tupac Shakur's 1990s releases, this Death Row compilation reimagines cuts such as ALL EYEZ ON ME's "Ambitions As a Ridah" and "Got My Mind Made Up" and DON KILLUMINATI's "Hail Mary" in a series of updated remixes, with guest appearances from a new generation of rap artists including Styles P, Daz Dillinger, and Kurupt. Nu Mixx Classics, Vol. 2 (Evolution: Duets and Remixes) is another in a long line of shameless attempts by Death Row to monetize its 2Pac back catalog, in this case by remixing previously released material and incorporating guest raps by the Outlawz and Kurupt. No one needs this album (after all, who out there is itching to hear a "rock remix" of "Hail Mary" with lame hard rock guitars?). All it does is further disgrace the Death Row brand name. Not even the most passionate 2Pac fan will find much, if anything, to enjoy here. Rather, anyone who is a true 2Pac fan should be disgusted by the appropriation of the deceased rapper's legacy for cheap cash-ins like this, where more craft went into the packaging than the music. It's downright maddening that junk CDs like this continue to see the light of day, regardless of whether or not anyone buys them. ~ Jason Birchmeier

Beginning his career in the early 1990s as a member of the Oakland rap-funksters Digital Underground, 2Pac rose to become perhaps the single most controversial figure in rap music, easily equal in popularity and notoriety to Snoop Dogg on the West Coast and sometime rival Notorious B.I.G. out East. Taking his moniker from a South American revolutionary, 2Pac managed to embrace themes of black self-determination and social conscience without dulling the edge of his thug image. Achieving almost unrivalled popularity while alive, 2Pac had a penchant for religious and iconic motifs, ensuring his status as a rap martyr after his murder in 1996.
