Performer: Various Artists/Robert Johnson
Producer: Neil Slaven (Compilation) Distributor: E1 Distribution (USA) Notes: As the myth of Robert Johnson has it, the young bluesman made a deal with the devil and was magically able to play and sing with unbelievable feeling and skill. Historical evidence tells a somewhat different story, as ROAD TO ROBERT JOHNSON AND BEYOND attests. In his travels Johnson met, heard, and learned from founding Delta blues artists Charlie Patton and Son House, and was also likely exposed to the styles of Blind Lemon Jefferson and Skip James, among others. Disc one of this copious four-disc set documents some of Johnson's primary influences. Disc two is devoted solely to the music of Johnson himself, while discs three and four give a chronicle of his seismic influence (on everyone from Muddy Waters to Elmore James to Blind Will Dukes). With Johnson as the focus, this is a surprisingly solid and fairly in-depth introduction to classic blues music.
