Notes: This is part of Legacy's Super Hits series. Blood, Sweat & Tears' entry in Columbia/Legacy's SUPER HITS line of budget compilations is a serviceable, though brief, compilation of hits and album tracks by one of the leading standard-bearers of late '60s/early '70s horn rock. Unlike most Blood, Sweat & Tears compilations, SUPER HITS includes selections from the group's first, best, and most experimental album, the Al Kooper-led CHILD IS FATHER TO THE MAN. "I Can't Quit Her" is clearly this disc's highlight, a powerful, jazz-inflected blues-rocker. Kooper left after that groundbreaking album, and with the addition of Canadian belter David Clayton-Thomas, the group settled into a string of blaring, brass-heavy, undeniably catchy hit singles, including "Spinning Wheel," "You've Made Me So Very Happy," "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know," and the Laura Nyro-penned "And When I Die," all of which are included here.
As initially conceived by Al Kooper, Blood, Sweat & Tears was the first and best of the jazz-rock horn bands. Though Kooper departed after the debut album, new singer David Clayton-Thomas led the band to huge commercial success with a more pop-oriented approach. BST--in both its Kooper and Clayton-Thomas incarnations--epitomized post-'60s eclecticism, crafting Top 40 hits out of musical influences as disparate as Billie Holiday, Tim Buckley, and Erik Satie.
