Taken on its own terms, as a random sampling of nine songs from Brooks & Dunn's catalog, Super Hits is entertaining and possibly even a bargain for listeners on a tight budget, even if most fans are much better-served by the definitive Greatest Hits. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine For most fans, it's inconceivable to have a Brooks & Dunn hits collection without "Boot Scootin' Boogie" or "Hard Workin' Man," neither of which are on the budget-line compilation Super Hits. And that, naturally, is a problem for the casual fan, the kind who would buy a budget-line disc expecting that their favorites would be present. That's not the case with Super Hits, which shares only three songs with the exhaustive 19-track Greatest Hits, released just a year and a half before this nine-cut sampler. Those songs -- "Neon Moon," "Rock My World (Little Country Girl)," "You're Gonna Miss Me When I'm Gone" -- are good, as are the remaining six songs (all album tracks), but this collection simply doesn't deliver the hits it promises. One of the most successful duos in country music history, Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn were put together in the early 1990s by former Arista Nashville label boss Tim DuBois, who thought the two singer-songwriters' styles would complement each other. The duo's sound--a mix of country harmonies, pop, rock and honky-tonk--made them superstars in the '90s, where they dominated the Vocal Duo category at every awards show. After two decades of success, both with the critics and on the charts, the duo broke up in 2009.
