Performer: Donovan
Artist: Jeff Beck Distributor: Sony Music Distribution ( Notes: Personnel includes: Donovan, Jeff Beck Group. Recorded between 1966 and 1972. Originally released on Epic Records. Digitally remastered by Rick Rowe (Media Force). A well chosen, if necessarily incomplete best-of compilation, lacking several of Donovan's most famous songs--"Season of the Witch" for example--but interestingly programmed nonetheless. Donovan remains, of course, one of the classic love-him-or-hate-him artists of the '60s, but there's no question that he had a flair for the daffily surreal hit single ("Atlantis," "Sunshine Superman," "Mellow Yellow"). He was also fortunate in having a sympathetic producer, Mickie Most, whose arrangements mostly saved him from the self-indulgence he might otherwise have lapsed into. Highlights here include the genuinely lovely faux art song "Lalena," and "Barabajgal," a collaboration with the Most-produced Jeff Beck Group that was the only really convincing rocker he ever waxed.
He began as a Guthrie/Dylan-style folkie, but soon Donovan Leitch adopted a more psychedelic flower-power stance. His knack for sunny, wistful pop songs produced a batch of giant 1960s hits. His fragile manchild voice and image made him a hippie pinup boy, but there was a deep wellspring of emotion behind songs like "Catch the Wind" and "Colours." By the '70s, Donovan had largely dropped off the radar, but he made a resounding comeback in the '90s with the spare, affecting, Rick Rubin-produced SUTRAS.
