Performer: Various Artists
Distributor: E1 Distribution (USA) Notes: This compilation features the best of the bad boys and girls from below the Mason-Dixon line. There is no sweet country-pop on this album, just a selection of tracks from tough-guy outlaw types, including Steve Earle, Merle Haggard, Drive By Truckers, the Kentucky Headhunters, Wet Willie, and the Ozark Mountain Daredevils. While some of the selections (Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" and .38 Special's "Hold On Loosely") are a tad uninspired, there are also plenty of forgotten gems, such as the female-fronted Rossington Collins Band's "Don't Misunderstand Me." Southern Outlaws: The Ultimate Southern Rock Collection is a mixed bag that contains original hit recordings, live versions, and inferior re-recordings spread out over two discs. Just about everything on the first disc is top-notch and contains the hit versions of "Sweet Home Alabama," "Hold on Loosely," "Guitar Town," and "Free Bird." The second disc falls flat with inferior versions of "Hot Rod Lincoln," "Train, Train," and "Flirtin' with Disaster." Since greatest-hits packages are readily available from all of these artists, there is no reason to waste your money on this poorly conceived compilation. ~ Al Campbell Southern Outlaws: The Ultimate Southern Rock Collection is a mixed bag that contains original hit recordings, live versions, and inferior re-recordings spread out over two discs.
