Notes: This is part of Legacy Recordings' Super Hits series. A budget-priced 10-track compilation covering Mott the Hoople's 1972-75 years at Columbia Records, SUPER HITS is a brief but compelling introduction to this underrated band. As one might expect, it features the band's biggest hit, "All the Young Dudes," alongside other great singles like "All the Way to Memphis," "Honaloochie Boogie," the proto-punk "Crash Street Kids," and the glam-era wink-wink "One of the Boys." SUPER HITS also features a number of excellent album tracks, including Ian Hunter's odd "Jerkin Crocus" and Mott's cover of "Sweet Jane," an FM radio hit that did a lot toward raising public consciousness of the Velvet Underground. Though 10 songs aren't enough to cover all of Mott's highest points, and classics like "I Wish I Was Your Mother" and "The Ballad of Mott the Hoople" are conspicuously absent, SUPER HITS is a cheap and easy way to discover one of the best bands of the early '70s.
While most rock fans remember Mott The Hoople as a thriving early-'70s glam band, they were also one of the first British bands to serve as a mouthpiece for the working class (predating both The Sex Pistols and The Clash by several years). Led by singer Ian Hunter and future Bad Company guitarist Mick Ralphs, Mott could rock out and pose with the best of 'em.
