SUPER HITS VOLUME 2 picks up where SUPER HITS left off, collecting ten singles and well-known album tracks from Nelson's nineteen-year tenure at Columbia Records. The first volume includes most of Nelson's number-one hits, but still most of the songs on VOLUME 2 should be familiar to fans of country radio. The collection focuses entirely on the mellow side of Nelson's music, drawing mostly from the singer's 1980s middle-of-the-road material. Included are several jazz standards ("Stardust," Without a Song") and light R&B covers ("Just Out of Reach," "Harbor Lights"). VOLUME 2 also features "Seven Spanish Angels," Nelson's chart-topping duet with Ray Charles; and Nelson's solo recording of "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys." All the discs in Columbia Records' SUPER HITS series contain ten popular tracks representing one artist or musical style. These budget-line discs work well as inexpensive introductions to Columbia's many country recording stars, although those searching for comprehensive hits packages should consider the label's slightly more expensive and more thorough greatest hits albums.
Willie Nelson began working in a conventional Nashville style and had great success as the songwriter of Faron Young's hit "Hello Walls" and others, but he was initially unable to make it as a performer. In the 1970s, he and Waylon Jennings made history with their outlaw country sound and image, growing their hair long and utilizing a raw, rock-influenced sound that endeared them to millions of country fans and rockers alike. Subsequently, Nelson ventured into Sinatra territory with STARDUST, an album of standards that became a huge success and established him as a singer who transcended genre boundaries. Throughout the '80s, '90s, and into the 21st century, he crossed over into pop and back again continually, even releasing an album of reggae covers, working with artists as diverse as Julio Iglesias and Ryan Adams.
