Recording information: 1970; 1972; 1973; 1975. The once monolithic Motown Sound had begun to fragment in the early '70s, and into the breach came Philadelphia International, the label run by genius producers/songwriters Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. Their stable of artists basically ruled the radio and the nation's dance floors in the middle of the decade, and the O'Jays were probably their classiest act. This greatest hits album is an excellent overview of their best work of the period, as well as an interesting time-capsule look back at an era when socially conscious music ("Survival," "Love Train") could co-exist with appeals to the feet ("Time to Get Down," "I Love Music").
Although formed in 1958, The O'Jays failed to find major success until the early '70s when they signed to the Philadelphia International label. Under the direction of producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, the group (along with label mate Harold Melvin and others) pioneered a brand of slick, danceable, smoothly accessible R&B music. This approach resulted in a string of hit singles that virtually defined what has become known as the "Philly sound."
