Notes: A good-quality budget-price compilation of hits by an artist who's surprisingly ill-served by best-ofs, the 10-track SUPER HITS is a brief but effective set of classics by one of the most unique and beloved rock stars of all time. Most of the hits are here. You get bolero-style ballads like "Crying" and the larger-than-life "In Dreams," whose spookier qualities were most famously underlined decades later in the David Lynch film BLUE VELVET. Pathos-filled weepfests like "It's Over" rub shoulders with the rockin' "Oh Pretty Woman," whose emotional rollercoaster that moves from desire to loss to jubilation in less than three minutes. Every track is a miniature masterpiece, whether it's a huge hit like "Only the Lonely" or a lesser-known gem like "Blue Angel." There's plenty more where this came from, but SUPER HITS is a fine collection for the neophyte or the casual fan.

Roy Orbison, a seminal rock & roll singer who initially recorded for the legendary Sun Records, created some of the most enduring hits of the 1950s and '60s. His near-operatic voice and dark, broken-hearted songs influenced a generation of artists. His songs and arrangements, almost symphonic in scope, set the template for pop sophistication in the early-to-mid-'60s. After a late-'80s comeback that included collaborations with Bono and Elvis Costello and a stint with the rock super-group the Travelling Wilburys, Orbison died of a heart attack in 1988.
