Notes: It seems like T.I. hasn't gotten any rest since he hit it big with his sophomore release--2003's TRAP MUZIK. With an impressive array of LPs, mixtapes, countless guest spots, and enough industry legwork on his Grand Hustle label in the meantime, the self-proclaimed "King of the South" has been steadily putting in work. With the follow-up to his multi-platinum smash, KING, T.I. carries a concept, pitting one persona against the other on the fittingly titled, T.I. VS. T.I.P. Speaking alternately as the rap industry mogul who moves millions and the street-corner hustler who just can't get the hood out of him, the ATL native is smart to slyly examine this duality on his own--a dilemma that has been known to dog the most successful hip-hop artists under the umbrella epithet "sell-out." Mannie Fresh, Lil C, Just Blaze, the Runners, Keith Mack, Danja, Eminem, and Jeff Bass are among the varied contributors whose production work makes T.I.'s fifth solo LP bang. T.I. VS. T.I.P. also features cameos from an array of superstar guests including Jay-Z, Eminem, Nelly, Alfa Mega, Busta Rhymes, and Wyclef Jean.
Rolling Stone (p.89) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "T.I VS T.I.P. boasts the latest in hardcore synth beats -- long on tweedly hooks, brooding chords and deftly syncopated electro-percussion..." Spin (p.108) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "In Act I, T.I.P. is at his boastful best, nodding to N.W.A....Producer Mannie Fresh supports a gothic, ethereal beat with rhythmic handclaps." Entertainment Weekly (p.136) - "[T]he dual protagonists make for an intriguing bout." -- Grade: B
Although T.I. was a player on the Atlanta rap scene as early as early as 2001, a less-than-stellar debut and a brief prison stint delayed his rise to fame until 2004 and the release of URBAN LEGEND. Featuring a host of top-shelf producers and guest MCs, the album was a hit, but was immediately eclipsed by its successor, 2006's KING, which debuted at number one on the Billboard pop charts. A tenacious performer and entrepreneur, T.I.'s career has been marked by an insatiable hunger for success throughout the entirety of the pop world. His profile was raised that much higher following his starring turn in the 2006 film ATL.
