Performer: Keely Smith
Producer: Voyle Gilmore; Frank Coilura (Compilation) Distributor: EMI Music Distribution Notes: Personnel: Keely Smith (vocals). Additional personnel: Frank Sinatra, Louis Prima. Singer Keely Smith is best known for providing a classy counterbalance to the wildman persona of her then-husband trumpeter/vocalist Louis Prima. She was, however, one of the finest and most beloved singers of her era. The ESSENTIAL CAPITOL COLLECTION skims the cream from Smith's 1950s tenure at the legendary label, and focuses almost exclusively on her solo work, the highlights of which include her takes on the classics "Stormy Weather" and "Fools Rush In." Given her notoriety as a collaborator, though, no Smith collection would be complete with out a few tracks showcasing her musical banter with Prima, and "That Old Black Magic" and "Nothing's Too Good For Baby" do the trick. The set, however, also includes a pair of lovely duets with Frank Sinatra, an avowed fan of the great Smith. Collectors will also jump for a previously unreleased track, the gently rhythmic "When Day is Done."
