Recording information: McHale, New York, NY. Congo-born, Belgium-raised and Paris-based, Zap Mama singer Marie Daulne is the worldbeat aesthetic personified. SUPERMOON combines African, pop, dance, and funk influences into a uniquely appealing form of pan-global rock & roll that appeals to the head and the hips simultaneously. Highlights include the slinky "Toma Taboo" and the hypnotically cross-rhythmic arrangement of the haunting "Go Boy." Guests include the Good the Bad and the Queen's Tony Allen and American R&B star Me'shell N'degeocello.
Entertainment Weekly (p.73) - "For culture vultures, it's an international feast.....A winning lazy-afternoon soundtrack." -- Grade: B+
JazzTimes (p.95) - "[The] lyrics, most written in English and all drawn from Daune's vivid life experiences...are bold, brave and powerfully life affirming."
Formed in the early 1990s by Marie Daulne, who was born in Zaire and raised in Europe, Zap Mama is a (mostly) a cappella group of female singers whose voices blend Christian choral music, Afropop, Pygmy vocalizations, and vocal percussion, and have inspired countless musicians. Zap Mama has sometimes worked with instrumentation, but the group's voices are equally vibrant and rich on their own.
