Producers: Studio Ton, E-40, Mike Mosley, Sam Bostic. Originally issued on the indie Sick Wid It label, E-40's The Mail Man EP was blown up into a near-album when the Jive label picked it up, added two tracks to it, and began introducing the West Coast slang king to hip-hop fans outside the Bay Area. The timing was right, too, because here the witty and hard rapper is coming into his own and nailing down the quick style that would make him a legend. He sounds ready to rise above of the bargain beats that producer Studio Ton was able to afford at the time, but the loose and homegrown feel of the EP has a streetwise charm that wouldn't be heard again once Jive began footing the bill. "Neva Broke" and "Bring the Yellow Tape" make for a killer, lowdown opening ten minutes and the great singles "Captain Save a Hoe" and the title track are both Bay classics, although the Jive bonus remix of "Captain" sounds unfortunately thinner. The other bonus cut, "Ballin' Out of Control," is much better with hand-clapping funk, spacy electro, and E-40's quirky style all coming together in perfect harmony. ~ David Jeffries
The Source (4/94, p.77) - 3 1/2 Stars - Very Good - "...Using his patented scat-and-scoot, stop-and-go delivery, he can flip the script about mobbin' and hustlin' so creatively that even an East Coast critic would have to give him props...."
As a solo performer, label owner (Sick Wid It Records), and member of hip-hop outfit the Click, rapper E-40 has been representing the often underappreciated Bay Area hip-hop scene since the early 1990s. E-40 is credited with helping the Bay Area hyphy movement (something of a West Coast version of crunk) gain national exposure and is well known for his legendary flow, which incorporates one of hip-hop's most extensive and developed slang vocabularies--a considerable amount of which was created by E-40 himself. His MY GHETTO REPORT CARD was released in 2006 and once again showed why 40 is one of the most respected gangsta rappers in the game.
