On its 2007 EP, RAW WAR, the Brooklyn-based experimental rock collective known as Gang Gang Dance presents another fascinatingly strange set of challenging avant-garde songs. While the stately melodies of "Nicoman" evoke the gilded aesthetic of latter-day Blonde Redhead, the track's off-kilter drum lines give it a chaotic edge. The tune's restless energy is intriguingly counterbalanced by the dreamy keyboard washes of "The Earthquake That Frees Prisoners," resulting in a remarkably varied outing that hypnotizes upon repeated listens.
The Wire (p.71) - "'Nicoman' mixes punk-funk guitars, Arabian tinged strings, vaulting piano runs and New Wave vocal stylings into a sweltering dancefloor stew."
Cobbled from the ashes of several defunct Brooklyn-based outfits, Gang Gang Dance is a loose confederation of artists and musicians who explore a kind of modern-day tribalism through percussion-heavy, electronics-aided avant rock. Liz Bougatsos's variously chanted and sung vocals evoke Middle Eastern sonorities as well as modern rockers like Kate Bush. The group's live shows displayed a penchant for off-kilter improvisation, winning them accolades with fans of free-form folk and experimental music. The year 2008 saw the appearance of a video documentary for the Whitney Biennial, a prestigious survey of contemporary American art. In August 2008, the group coordinated the Brooklyn wing of "88Boadrum," a bi-coastal concert featuring 88 drummers performing in spiral formation.
