Tegan and Sara: Tegan and Sara (vocals, guitar); Hawksley Workman (guitar, harmonica, piano, keyboards, drum). Personnel: Karl Mohr (keyboards, drum programming). Originally released in 2000, when identical twins Tegan and Sara Quinn were only 19 years old, THIS BUSINESS OF ART is the album that most reveals the sisters' folk-rock roots. Like a younger, hipper Indigo Girls, THIS BUSINESS OF ART updates the singer-songwriter folk-rock of the 1970s for the indie generation, adding sardonic commentary and a more overt political subtext to largely acoustic songs like the defiant "Proud." Other highlights include "All You Got," "More For Me," and the wryly ironic album closer, "Superstar." After the closure of the sisters' original label, THIS BUSINESS OF ART was reissued in 2007 in a basically identical package.
CMJ (7/24/00, p.24) - "...Wise beyond their years. Their songs are agitated and angst-ridden, and feature barbed lyrics, percussive guitar and sassy lead vocals..."
Tegan & Sara are twin sisters from Canada who have won over legions of fans with their self-deprecating humor and energetic acoustic music that marries emo honesty with pop sparkle and songcraft. After winning a local battle of the bands in their native Calgary in the mid 1990s, the then-adolescent sisters began playing clubs relentlessly, eventually gaining a spot on the Lilith Fair tour and landing a record deal with Neil Young's Vapor Records. Their first album in 2000 quickly garnered much acclaim, and by the release of their third official album, SO JEALOUS, in 2004, they were genuine stars.
