This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. By 2002, twin sisters Tegan & Sara had made a name for themselves with the Lilith Fair crowd by playing acoustic folk-rock that highlighted their voices and their pop-centric song sensibility. Yet IF IT WAS YOU, the follow-up to the duo's popular 2001 debut THIS BUSINESS OF ART, stepped up their game by adding electric elements, tighter songwriting, and an occasionally punky edge. "Time Running," "Monday Monday Monday," and the single "I Hear Noises" illustrate the sisters' knack for creating simple, hook-heavy songs that capture the ear and don't let go. Tegan & Sara benefit from the use of a full band and the sharper production here, both of which create a larger canvas for their songcraft, helping pave the way for their commercial breakthrough with 2004's SO JEALOUS.
Uncut (5/03, p.94) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...IF IT WAS YOU is a collection of energetic girl-pop full of surging melodies..."
Mojo (Publisher) (3/03, p.112) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Their combined voices are swoony and warm, yet edgy, their hooks are manifest and lyrics emphatic..."
Tegan & Sara are twin sisters from Canada who have won over legions of fans with their self-deprecating humor and energetic acoustic music that marries emo honesty with pop sparkle and songcraft. After winning a local battle of the bands in their native Calgary in the mid 1990s, the then-adolescent sisters began playing clubs relentlessly, eventually gaining a spot on the Lilith Fair tour and landing a record deal with Neil Young's Vapor Records. Their first album in 2000 quickly garnered much acclaim, and by the release of their third official album, SO JEALOUS, in 2004, they were genuine stars.
