Although it was recorded the same year as Peter Case's old power-pop band the Plimsouls' reunion album, 1998's FULL SERVICE NO WAITING is a stripped-down, folk-tinged, alt country-ish album that's probably the most bare bones recording of his solo career. Although there are interesting sonic touches--Lili Haydn plays violin on a couple of tracks, and bodhran and bagpipes both make appearances--Case and producer Andrew Williams keep the arrangements to the bare minimum, putting all of the focus on Case's voice and guitar. Luckily, Case's smart narratives and touching emotional miniatures are more than strong enough to carry the album on their own. "On the Way Downtown" and the lovely "Drunkard's Harmony" are particular highlights, but FULL SERVICE NO WAITING is a substantial, enjoyable listen all the way through.
Entertainment Weekly (2/6/98, p.63) - "...Case's sixth solo effort offers his usual blend of lyrical passion and melodic craft..." - Rating: B+
Musician (3/98, p.99) - "...Case's bare-bones, tribal-folk aesthetic is properly realized....Case at his stripped-down best--vivid tales spun with simple, hooky melodies, and colorfully delivered without slickness....Case's roots-rock leanings hit the mark..."
