Englishman Craig David's countrymen hold him and his work in high esteem; no less iconic a musical personage than Sir Elton John has been known to sing David's praises. Naturally, though, in the world of R&B what matters most is how this former DJ stacks up alongside his US contemporaries. Fortunately for both him and us, David compares quite favorably. In fact, the vibrant, often surprising production on the deceptively titled SLICKER THAN YOUR AVERAGE immediately stands apart from so many of the cookie-cutter soundalikes with which this particular field is cluttered. Sure, David mixes R&B, pop, and hip-hop flavors like any contemporary R&B man would, but as the old saying goes, "it ain't what you do, it's the way that you do it." Leave it to a Brit to cut the Yanks at their own game. Funky syncopation and danceable tempos are the order of the day ("Fast Cars," "Eenie Meenie"), but David's got a swoon-worthy voice that can wrap itself around a ballad just as easily, as shown on the heart-melter "You Don't Miss Your Water ('Til the Well Runs Dry)." All in all, David's second time out of the gate is fully as successful as his first.
Rolling Stone (12/12/02, p.96) - "...One of the most subtle male R&B records in a good while.."
Vibe (1/03, p.130) - 3 out of 5 - "...Skillfully wrought and stylish....He remains one of the United Kingdom's tastiest exports..."d
U.K. R&B singer-songwriter Craig David emerged in the late 1990s as the smooth, soulful voice on U.K. Garage act Artful Dodger's "Re-rewind (The Crowd Say Bo Selecta)." Blending the beats of the emergent U.K. Garage scene with slick, commercial vocals, David swiftly crossed over into the mainstream. His first solo single, "Fill Me In," grabbed the U.K.'s number 1 spot in April 2000. Repeating the feat again with "7 Days," Craig found himself poised to garner healthy sales on both sides of the Atlantic with the release of his debut full-length, BORN TO DO IT. The releases that followed were strong, yet also displayed a more urban-oriented sound.
