Performer: Joe Tex
Distributor: Gotham Distributing Corp. Notes: Sony Music Special Products' Greatest Hits offers a sampling of his classic Dial recordings. With the exception of "Ain't Gonna Bump No More (With No Big Fat Woman)," most of the big hits are here -- "Hold What You've Got," "A Sweet Woman Like You," "Skinny Legs and All," "I Gotcha," "I Want to (Do Everything For You)," "S.Y.S.L.J.F.M. (The Letter Song)" -- which makes this worthwhile for casual fans on a tight budget. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
With strong ties to gospel, Joe Tex's '60s soul combined gritty funk with earnest preaching. His singing fearlessly swooped into upper registers, one moment smooth, and the next rough. He knew how to heat up and hold a crowd, skills he also used in his other occupation as a minister. He was a member of the soul supergroup the Soul Clan, which also featured Solomon Burke, Arthur Conley, Ben E. King, and Don Covay. Tex's career slowed considerably in the 1970s following a conversion to Islam, and in 1982 he died of a heart attack. He is still acknowledged as one of soul music's most energetic performers.
