With THE SOUND OF REVENGE, Chamillionaire's 2005 Universal debut, the Houston-based rapper makes the most of his major-label deal, which includes his own Chamillitary imprint. On SOR, Paul Wall's former collaborator amps up that duo's signature chopped-and-screwed mixtape sound with heavy-duty arrangements that expertly showcase Chamillionaire's deep, husky voice. The introductory title track is marked by machine-gun beats, and establishes the album's fierce, restless mood. But the disc's highlight is the utterly infectious single "Turn It Up," which boasts Scott Storch's distinctive chiming production and an appearance by Lil' Flip. Although fellow Texan Bun-B, Krayzie Bone, and others also show up, REVENGE doesn't rely on guest shots; this is Chamillionaire's show through and through, as proven by each track on this assured and potent record.
Rolling Stone (No. 986, p.90) - 3.5 out of 5 stars - "...[C]risply enunciated flows..." Spin (pp.137-138) - "Cham hinges his distinct sound on a rich baritone..." - Grade: B+ The Wire (p.47) - "Perfecting the tightest of flows and an ability to sing the snappiest of choruses...his has gradually become one of houston's most individual voices." Mojo (Publisher) (p.110) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[A] lethal arrangement of dank bass, rhythm tracks built from gunshots and handclaps, ornate synth-lines, and Chamillionaire's dead-calm vocal.."
Flying under the mainstream radar for many years, Chamillionaire (aka the Mixtape Messiah) has been a fixture of the Houston hip-hop scene since he was a teenager, working with the now-legendary Swisha House clique and releasing dozens of mixtapes that went "ghetto gold." By the time he finally hooked up with a major label in 2005, his multi-tempo delivery and harmonized vocals were already shining like a diamond grill. As THE SOUND OF REVENGE went platinum, Chamillionaire assumed his rightful place alongside Bun-B, Paul Wall, Slim Thug, and Mike Jones as a true playa in the Houston hip-hop renaissance of the early 2000s.
