The One That You Love was Air Supply's second international release and perhaps their finest all-around studio outing, spawning three top ten hits, including a number one with the heart-wrenching title track. The sheer drama of "Here I Am" and the swooping orchestration of "Sweet Dreams" complete this smash-hit trilogy, and as suggested by their name, a sense of air and space pervades other pop-tastic ballads such as "This Heart Belongs to Me" and "Keeping the Love Alive." This is definitely the ideal second step for those looking beyond the greatest-hits package. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia Like its American debut, LOST IN LOVE, Air Supply's 1981 album, THE ONE THAT YOU LOVE, spawned three Top 5 hits, including their first Number One with the title track. (The duo had released other albums in its native Australia.) Revisiting the sound that had been so successful on the previous record, THE ONE THAT YOU LOVE offers no big surprises, except for the fact that the album neatly sidesteps the traditional sophomore slump. The material, mostly written by co-lead singer Graham Russell, is uniformly stronger than on its predecessor, and the hits--also including "Here I Am" and "Sweet Dreams"--are both equal to the earlier singles, as effortlessly weightless as the balloon on the album's cover. Although later Air Supply records present some diminishing returns, THE ONE THAT I LOVE is worth checking out.
Australian MOR/soft-pop group Air Supply started recording in the mid-'70s, but it was their first US album, 1980's LOST IN LOVE, that brought them a flurry of hits ("Lost in Love," "Every Woman in the World," "All out of Love") and international acclaim. The heart of the band is singer/songwriters Russell Hitchcock and Graham Russell, whose gentle voices and delicately constructed pop songcraft meshed perfectly with the albums' lush production to make Air Supply one of the best-selling acts of their era. Though Air Supply's soft sound fell out of favor by the time the '90s rolled around, Russell and Hitchcock continued working together with a shifting lineup of accompanists.
